Wednesday 15th October saw both LifeLeague and The Sacred Heart of Jesus Pro-Life Society join forces to hold a joint protest at Parliament Buildings, Stormont.

Ministers came under fire in the Commons over 'tactics' used to limit, and possibly block altogether, debate on abortion law. Under a timetable motion outlined by the Government, MPs had just four and a half hours to debate a raft of amendments to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill.

If a father doesn’t want his child for whatever reason (for example, he’s under - age, the child is disabled, he doesn't want to face the consequences of his actions or perhaps he just simply doesn't care), then abortion has the short term positive effect for him in that his ‘problem’ is removed. If he is a rapist, abortion has the positive effect of removing one of the visible evidences of his conduct and helps salve his conscience - “well it was no big deal, if she gets a quick, simple, harmless abortion, she’ll be alright, I’ll have done no lasting damage, in a year she’ll have forgotten about it and moved on”.
Then again, he simply may not even care.
If the father does care, if he truly loves the mother or if he wants her to have the child; then the abortion will have a very serious negative consequence upon him. Any man who truly loves his partner and cares for her welfare would be an emotional wreck - helplessly watching the one he loves passing through the horror of post - abortion trauma. In addition, if he disagrees with abortion, then the mere fact that one is taking place and being visited upon his own child will cause great distress.
In three out of four cases, a father who wants his child, will go through ‘male post - abortion trauma’: consisting of nightmares, poor self - image, role conflict, excessive guilt, depression and the breakdown of relationships with his wife (many couples break up after an abortion).
One father who experiences this said: - “I thought I was a liberated man. I’d be able to walk in here and sit down and say “Here’s an abortion” and that would be it. But now that I’m here, I’m a wreck.....I don’t think anyone could depend on me in this situation....I’m shaken....I really do want to know what they will do for her (the mother)...(but)...How about me? Do they have something for me to lay on while I die.”
Two major factors account for male post - abortion trauma.
Firstly, in an era when men are increasingly becoming more involved in the raising of their children, they are being denied the right to get involved in a life or death decision affecting their unborn child.
Secondly, parents are parents forever, even of a dead child. Emotional resolution in this case is clearly made almost impossible because, when a birth is denied, there are no visible conclusions, graves or markers - just a memory. Thus leaving the grieving process without focus and unfinished.
The effects of abortion on the father are therefore overwhelmingly negative.
