U.K. woman sentenced for illegal abortion

A British woman who underwent an illegal abortion is believed to be the first person ever convicted under the country's 78-year-old child-destruction law.  Maisha Mohammed, 22, of Manchester was given a year in prison Friday in a move anti-abortion activists said should lead to a crackdown on illegal abortion providers.

The Telegraph said Saturday that Mohammad had apparently aborted an illegitimate baby when she was more than seven months pregnant, although she never admitted she had done so and the fetus never turned up.

Police told the British newspaper Mohammed repeatedly changed her story and might not have been charged had she admitted what had happened. They continue to search for the person who carried out the procedure and presumably disposed of the unborn baby.

The LifeLeague says: We welcome this conviction because it serves to connect the phrase 'child destruction' with 'abortion' in the public mind.  We look forward to the day when all 'child destruction', from conception onwards, will be similarly delt with.  Please pray for this woman that God will open her eyes to what she has done and show her mercy.  Pray and continue lobbying so that, one day, all cases of 'child destruction' will be treated equally rather than the present day ageist sham to which they are subjected.

GP urged to call police after patient he sent away has abortion at 28 weeks

A GP is being urged to call in police over suspicions that a patient had her healthy baby aborted more than a month after the legal limit of 24 weeks.  The 22-year-old woman requested a termination in February, when she was 28 weeks pregnant, but the doctor told her it would be illegal.

She was referred for counselling to the British Pregnancy Advisory Service - a charity which also runs private abortion clinics.  Several weeks later she returned to the surgery about a different matter and was no longer pregnant. All she would say was that she 'had it sorted privately'.

The GP, concerned that an illegal abortion had been carried out, sought guidance from colleagues, who have advised him to tell police.  More than 90 per cent of babies born at 28 weeks in Britain survive.

The LifeLeague says: Opposition to late abortion amongst the public, parliamentarians and the medical profession has never been stronger. This matter, including any role played by BPAS must be rigorously investigated by the police.  British clinics are allowed to provide contact details of overseas doctors who carry out late abortions but cannot refer women for the treatment.  However, suspicions will be aroused by a 2005 Department of Health report criticising BPAS for giving out such contact details too readily.  LifeLeague will be closely monitoring BPAS and any further developments.

We recommend that you click here to contact your MP and request that they either, through an EDM, written question or a contribution from the floor of the House, call for an independent parliamentary investigation into this case and BPAS.

Poland's Deputy PM Speaks Out Again

Poland's deputy prime minister, speaking at the recent World Congress of Families in Warsaw, said that the Polish government would not agree to demands of the European Union to provide abortion, homosexual rights and other attacks on the family. Mr Roman Giertych told the 3,300 delegates from around the world that Polish legislation to protect children in schools from homosexual propaganda would go forward as planned, despite intimidation from the EU.

The LifeLeague says: It was an immense honour for us to be a part of this recent congress and we thank God for the exceptional leadership and courage displayed by the League of Polish Families in the fight for family values throughout Europe.  We also thank God that Poland's government has the guts to stand up to EU secularist bullying and say 'no'.

Update on 'Miss D'

The Irish teenager, known only as Miss D, who won a high court battle to travel to England for an abortion has returned to Ireland. Miss D's severely disabled baby was killed by late term chemical abortion and is expected to be buried in Ireland. A poll by the Irish Independent found that two-thirds of voters agreed with abortion if the unborn child was 'non-viable' and Miss D said she was "very happy that people feel that way".

The LifeLeague says: If these opinion poll findings are correct, then they are clearly very disturbing - a serious warning to pro-lifers.  Just because Ireland is still, broadly speaking, a pro-life nation, we can never afford to rest on our laurels.  Our activism must continue, in both frequency and urgency.

Free Church leader wants presbyterian churches to reunite to challenge decline in Family Values

In his keynote address, the Rev Dr John Ross, Moderator of the Free Church of Scotland, laments the fractured state of the Presbyterian Church in Scotland and calls for the formation of a new, united church.

Dr Ross argued that in recent years there has been an "aggressive sabotage" of Scotland's Christian heritage, combined with increasing social exclusion, family breakdown, soaring abortion rates, gender confusion and a collapse of church attendance.

The LifeLeague says: We welcome Dr Ross' determination that some kind of pro-active endeavour must be embarked upon in order to save Scotland from the culture of death.  We look forward to his words giving birth to action.
