It is now widely accepted that there is a crisis in sexual health among teenagers in the UK. It is often quoted that we have the highest rate of teenage pregnancies in Western Europe. According to Blair and Brown, we cannot afford to ignore this shameful record. Every year some 90,000 teenagers in England become pregnant, the vast majority of whom are unmarried. Around 8,000 of these unwanted pregnancies occur in girls aged 15 or younger.
What is so disturbing about the crisis is that it follows three decades of nationwide sex education. Respective British Governments have made sex education a major priority, claiming that it is the answer to the problems of teenage pregnancies and sexually-transmitted diseases among young people. Yet the evidence before our eyes shows that sex education has not achieved the promised benefits.
Government policy on sex education is outlined in two documents. The first is the Teenage Pregnancy Report (1999), prepared by the Government’s Social Exclusion Unit, which argues that the high teenage pregnancy rate in the UK is due to ignorance. The second is Sex and Relationship Guidance (2000) issued to all schools and health authorities. It explains that teaching schoolchildren about contraception is at the heart of the Government’s strategy to reduce teenage pregnancy.
However, in the Government’s mind any attempt to introduce a moral dimension into the discussion on sexual behaviour and contraception is not only unhelpful, but potentially harmful. The edifice of sex education is built on the false assumption that it is natural for children to be sexually promiscuous. Consistent with their amoral approach, sex educators promote the idea that children are likely to have sex the moment they become sexually mature, and so the issue is simply to prevent them from becoming pregnant.
It is in the light of these facts, that the LifeLeague opposes sex education in it’s various forms and guises, in the full knowledge that it is amoral, has a destructive effect on society and contributes to the overall problem of sexual promiscuity and perversion in the UK.
