The LifeLeague were involved in a media frenzy about an article distributed in our e-newsletter concerning Woldingham School in Surrey. Woldingham School is one of the highest profile Catholic Girl's Schools in England, charging up to £21000 per year for boarders.
It came to our attention that Woldingham was teaching girls under their charge a program of explicit sex education involving the placing of condoms on phallic objects, which contravenes basic teaching on morality and is totally inconsistent with the Roman Catholic status of the school. The reaction that was produced in the media far surpassed any expectation we had for the story.
During the media bombardment, primarily from the likes of the Guardian (no surprise there!) there were a mountain of half truths printed and broadcast ignoring the central point of what we had said. This point concentrated on the premise that if a school is going to describe itself as Roman Catholic and on that basis demand substantial payments from parents to educate their children, then it ought to maintain the ethos it purports to represent.
As well as downright defamatory nonsense, many positive things flowed from the spotlight being placed on The LifeLeague. At the top of the list was the activities of the school itself. Headmistress Ms Vernon had falsely claimed that education to facilitate recreational sex was compulsory under the national curriculum, whereas in reality Catholic Schools have an opt-out clause on such things and are only required to teach disease prevention.
Indeed, the rather dubious Ms Vernon denied, then admitted, then apologised in three Catholic papers. In each story she changed her stance accordingly. Surely such a woman is simply not fit to head such a prestigious seat of learning.. It also gave further opportunity to draw attention to both the grotesque horror and wickedness of abortion as the central pillar of our campaigning and also to bring into view the core link between contraception as the bedrock of the culture of death, and abortion with its indistinguishable mindset.
The media attention has been massive, with LifeLeague spokespersons appearing on eight radio stations, five TV news reports as well as huge articles in The Guardian, Sunday Telegraph, Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday and a whole host of regional newspapers. Although most stories attack The LifeLeague, our strategy to end the silent holocaust by focusing media attention on the issue is working effectively.
Sadly the media reporting drew out what can only be described as devastating news for the British pro-life movement. For many years 'Life' have been respected as a pro-life support charity based clearly upon a Christian ethos. In a letter to The Guardian in which Life were publicly distancing themselves from The LifeLeague, Life Chief Executive Martin Foley described the arguments put forward by his organisation "as being grounded in humanist principles". As you can imagine this has deeply shocked many in the pro-life movement. No matter what we say about contraception and abortion, if we leave God out of the equation we will only fail.
